VESTIBULAR PATHOLOGIES

While often underestimated, vertigos are extremely disabling. They often cause long term illness requiring sick leave. Chronic vertigos like Meniere’s disease, may lead to pronounced permanent handicaps. Vestibular disorders affect 1/3 of the population over 40 and play a major role in accidents (falls) of the elderly population. Acute and chronic syndromes with vestibular disorders include:

  • benign paroxysmal vertigohaircells

  • vestibular neuritis

  • Meniere's disease

  • endolymphatic hydrops

  • perilymphatic fistula

  • temporal bone trauma

  • chronic or acute labyrinthine infection

  • serous labyrinthine barotraumatism

  • autoimmune inner ear disease

  • vestibular syndromes after surgical treatments

  • inner ear channelopathies

  • vestibular schwannomas

  • presbyvestibulia

    VESTIBULAR FUNCTION

Through integration of the vestibular, visual and proprioceptive sensory inputs, the vestibular function allows upright posture, movement  through space and maintaining gaze and balance.
Any impairment of the equilibrium (i.e. the vestibule) has dramatic consequences on our ability to perform any simple daily task.
